Isshin-Ryu Karate

Carolina Isshin-Ryu Academy is sponsored by the Matthews Police Athletic League.

Classes are offered 2 times a week:

Classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays:

  • Youth Classes (8-15 year olds) 6:30–7:30 PM.
  • Adult Male Classes 6:30–8:00 PM.
  • Adult Female Classes 6:30–8:00 PM.

Membership Fees:
• Adults: $50/month.
• Youth: $35/month. (8-15 years of age)

Membership covers:
• Membership with the USJA.
• Membership with the AOKA.
• Insurance coverage while participating in an approved events.

You may wear loose athletic clothing.  A karate uniform and sparring equipment is not required for the first month, but highly encouraged.  Uniform prices range from $25-$40 depending on your size.  Sparring equipment is required to protect yourself and your partner during the training session.  Average cost: $60.  

During class, you will be taught the basic skills and principles of karate.  This will include proper etiquette, basic drills, kata, use of martial arts weapons and Japanese terminology.

More and more adults and children are joining the martial arts every day. They are discovering the benefits of better physical fitness, the security of self defense and finding it promotes a positive attitude. At Carolina Isshin-Ryu Academy, we believe the martial arts are all about feeling good about yourself, developing at your own pace in a safe, friendly environment.

You can now join the rewarding art of Isshin-Ryu Karate and start earning the respect that you deserve. You don’t need to be in shape to start, we encourage our students to go at their own pace and to slowly add more effort as they improve.

The martial arts are 90% mental and 10% physical, once you have developed the inner strength and perseverance, your body will respond in kind.

Our highly trained staff of instructors are friendly and professional. They are there to help people of all ages reach goals that they never thought possible. It’s not too late, experience a program that will propel you into a more successful and rewarding future!

8th Degree Black Belt, Isshin-Ryu Karate.

He earned his promotion to Black Belt in 1971 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Okinawan Karate Association.

Awards and Achievements include:

• 1973 and 1975 One of the top fighters in New England. • 1975 Massachusetts State Fighting Grand Champion.
•
1995 Spirit of Isshin-Ryu Award.
• 1999 Sensei of Sensei Award.
•
2003 Inducted into the Isshin-Ryu Hall of Fame.
